SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN







1a. Find a picture of Samuel De Champlain. What does he look like? Explain the picture in 5-8 sentences.



When I know our next exploration is about this person I was so glad and exciting. This hero portrait is for Champlain- our next goal. This picture shows us our protagonist Champlain stand on a stone which is on the coast. He wears the north west shaped armor and uses his left hand to hold a sharp long sword. The other hand crowds a metaled helmet. His grace reveals his gentle and polite. On the right bottom corner, there is a solder stand beside him and waiting for his order. The sight surrounds them is a part of dark grove near the far deep water and the sea associates the sky with a crowd of yellow dragon cloud by the crystal lighted see level. It seems a wind blowing Champlain's long brown wavy hair and told us the story of a hero have started already.

Samuel De Champlain is a great person who developed New France by his exploration. He was the Navigator, Cartographer, soldier, Explorer, Administrator and Chronicler of New France who was called “The father of New France”. His name was changed by the people how comes from the Notaries and the Printers-Librarians. They all accept add “De” in to Champlain’s family name. Except governor of Quebec and New France. He was born in 1567s and 1580s in Brouage and died in 25 December 1623 in Quebec, Canada, New France.




2. What is his relationship with Canada? Why is he important to Canada?




He made a great exploration of the history of Canada. He had found out the Quebec in 1608 and began to build houses to change this area to became a city. New France, the area he had named this place and improved. He had also made the relationship with Iroquois. In 1609s, he had helped natives in war to against Iroquois. He was a great explorer who discovered and dominated Quebec city and New France.




3. When did he explore? What was happening during history at this time?



Champlain started his first trip to North America.During this long journey, he learnt a lot from the experiences of Cartier. He created a map for St. Lawrence River after he returned to France. Champlain arrived on board the Bonnee-Rename on 15 March 1603 . During this time, Fur trade had happened between French and Iroquois.

The most great exploration of his life is he explored New France. On March 29, 1613, he arrived to New France to continue to discover the country of Huron. People hoped him to found out the "North Sea " of this area. He gave his first description of this place after he traveled to Ottawa River. Than he returned to Saint-Malo in August. After that, he was trying to work to build the relationship with natives and still helped them to against Iroquois. By Champlain's effort and his native guides' help, he discovered the Ottawa River and reached Lake Nipissing.




5. Why did he explore? What were his reasons for exploration?

In 1603, Champlain started his first trip to North America. He went to North America to see all the way that Cartier followed or saw by himself.At that time, Champlain decided and promised to Henry IV, the king of France to make a report on his further discoveries. The story of the last explorer affected him to discover the new lands and made him go further. Champlain just like Cabot and Cartier who follow the great exploration before them.


6. How did he explore? What transportation methods did he use?



He explored by using boats and ships when he at Tadoussac. There, they left their ships and used boats to travel to Quebec. Most of the land Champlain had discovered are Islands, includes New France. Except walk with foot, almost time they were on the ships or boats. I think Champlain might had a good health when he was a adult, because if he was very illness, it is hard for him to travel for a long time.

The statue of Champlain is standing on a stone support in this picture. His body was made by the black copper metal and he stand politely just like greeting to the building which beside him. On the top of the building, there is a small flag that represent Canada. The statue on the picture shows his great and how important he is of this country.
